Re-Internment of the Mortar That was Removed by the City

La Jolla, CA. On October 8, 2021 members of the Kumeyaay and Kwaaymii held a blessing ceremony and unveiled a new bronze plaque dedicated to the resilience of the Kumeyaay.

A Kumeyaay bedrock milling feature was removed almost 5 years ago during a City project and has finally been reinterned to its location at Cuvier Park with a beautiful plaque that says:” May the resiliency of the Kumeyaay forever be remembered.”

Bird Singers commemorated the event along with a blessing. In attendance were community members including Courtney Coyle from the City of San Diego’s Historical Resources Board, Tribal Leaders(including Chairman Cody Martinez, (Sycuan) and Chairwoman Angela Elliott Santos (Manzanita) Tribal Council and Tribal members (Including from Jamul, Mesa Grande, San Pasqual, Sycuan and Viejas along with City staff (Myra Herrmann, City Tribal Liaison in attendance for this event.

It was a beautiful day, after the prior light rain which served to further bless the occasion. We noted several members of the public already stopping by to read the plaque.
