Kumeyaay Wikipedia Workshop

On May 22, 2017, the Barona Band of Mission Indians will be hosting a conference focused on the Wikipedia on-line encyclopedia and how Kumeyaay and other tribes can work to create a better balance in the information accessed by students, researchers and the general public.  This workshop was developed through the efforts of the Kumeyaay-Wikipedia Initiative organized by Kumeyaay educators Stan Rodriguez and Michael Connolly.  This conference is free and open to interested Native Americans, as well as educators working with, or on behalf of, Native American students.

For most students in the school systems, research for homework assignments start with a search engine such as Google.  Wikipedia is usually one of the first results to show up.  From the initial Wikipedia search, several other references may branch off into other reference pages.  The portrayal of individual tribes or Native Americans in general may not accurately reflect a balanced portrayal of the topic.  This is an opportunity to discuss how to directly affect the information referenced by millions of students and researchers into Native history, culture, economics, and other topics.

Location: Barona Resort Conference Center
