Today, generalizations and inaccuracies about American Indian genealogy research persist. Clarifying the facts is essential for successful research. The evolving history of the U.S. government's changing policies regarding American Indians resulted in its creation of documents intended to keep track of American Indians under its administration. Although the U.S. government compiled different census rolls for specific tribes, the primarily set of documents is the Indian Census Rolls. Knowing and understanding the history and nature of these census rolls compared to other census rolls for American Indians is necessary for successful research. The goal of this presentation is to provide the historical context for the evolving nature of these rolls, and their usefulness in American Indian genealogy research today.

Michael McLaughlin has been American Indian Resource Center Librarian for the County of Los Angeles Public Library for 17 years, and is the American Indian Subject Specialist for the County Library system. He is an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. In addition to his Library Science degree he holds a Master's in American Indian Studies - History and Law.
The library will not be open for research. Times are approximate.
