The Morongo Band of Mission Indians has opened First Californian credit union on the reservation.

The new cedit union was developed in conjunction with the California Indian Consortium to provide banking, financial services and financial educational opportunities to Morongo tribal members and their families and Morongo employees and vendors.

Located east of the Morongo Casino, Resort and Spa in the former Casino Morongo facility, First Californian will offer a variety of Lending Products such as vehicle loans (new or used), personal loans, mortgages, recreational vehicles and student loans, tribal officials said.

Other services include savings and deposits through money market, dedicated savings, IRA, certificate of deposit or Christmas club savings. The credit union serves as the first partnership between a tribe and a credit union. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) will regulate the new site.

“We’re proud to offer Tribe-owned banking services on the reservation,” said Robert Martin, chairman, Morongo Band of Mission Indians. “Years in the making, First Californian credit union represents our commitment to not only our Morongo membership, but also our employees and business partners.”

Special programs include student saver bundles for college-bound students, direct deposit of disability or Social Security payments and a credit analyzer to help customers raise credit scores by better management of debt.

For convenience and immediate account access, First Californian will offer online banking to view e-statements, balances and account history, transfer funds between accounts and bill pay. Three employees work at First Californian, a branch manager and two loan processors.
