Franciscan Friars were on their way to southern California with an army of guards, by order of the King. The Friar's sole purpose, to spread Catholicism, baptizing the non-believers and saving their souls. Meanwhile, all worthwhile natural resources would be claimed for Spain. Due to the intricate system of communication -through a system of lookouts and runners from all points, the Kuchut Kwataay - leaders of the Kumeyaay - were aware of the onslaught of the Spaniards. With the Spaniards came the devastation of disease, such as Smallpox, to which there was no defense. Population - 20, 000 - 28,000 Kumeyaay residing in Southern California upon Spanish contact. |
