Soaring Eagles Children Dance

By Roy Cook

Soaring Eagles Tuesday evening, Nov. 17, 09 was enthusiastic, unpredictable and indicative of the season and the community. There is a bit of sickness out there and the everyday flu too. Vickie Gambala is fighting back from pneumonia and attends this evening.

Chuck is juggling what he can with his schedule to fit in all the invitations for the Soaring Eagles during this Native American heritage month. He has much new information to announce and introduce this evening. There are some visitors from the Sierra Madre in Mexico, Huichol tribal members in their traditional regalia. They have come to dance and see what the Soaring Eagle practice community gathering is to experience. Everyone is fed after Randy Edmonds blessing and the visitors are made welcome to eat Hamburgers and macaroni with cheese and enjoy the evening.

Girls fancy shawl, boys grass dance and traditional songs are sung. Along with southern women and jingle, dance the evening settles into the familiar rhythm. Two drums keep the feet flying and the toes tapping of those in the audience watching. Family members beam with pride and follow ‘their’ dancer around the arena as they dance and show off the moves they have learned.

After the birthday cake and songs, Chuck and Randy ask the boys to bring out their gourd dance rattles. Most say they are at home. Next week we will have a gourd dancer practice led by SCAIR Senior advisor Randy Edmonds.

A short set of Round dance songs finish off the evening. All leave with much to think about and plan for the next Soaring Eagle performance. See you there next week!
