Tom Ward was born and raised in Wyoming. He married and they raised their children in Wyoming. He has been sculpting for forty years. His sculpture reflects his interest in history, animals and his rural upbringing.

Tom is also a member of the Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. The Kumeyaay are Native Americans who live in what is now Southern California. Tom moved to the reservation in 1996 at the age of 47. He has lived on the reservation for the last 11 years and during that time he has served on the tribal government, worked for his tribe, and worked for the local Indian Clinic

During this time he has started working with gourds as well as his sculpture.
