Our sacred mountain for sale
Karen Vigneault
Howka brothers and Sisters I feel we must preserve our sacred mountain.
I am wondering if you would post something that is important for all Kumeyaay to know . Our sacred mountain, Mt. Kuchama is up for sale. I feel we must preserve our sacred mountain from being taken over by non indian people. The man that owned the property died and his wife was supposed to will it back to tribal people. She has said she needs money and now has signs all over saying it is up for sale.
It is being sold for $140,000 if indians will buy it … more if whites buy it … I was wondering if we can get this message out in hopes that someone or a group of indians will buy it .

Editor’s note: Correction on Kuchuma. Karen V. erronously posted “…The man that owned the property died and his wife was supposed to will it back to tribal people….” Not true. The wife died also, the children want the Sacred Mountain Ranch bought by the Kummeyay, so that it can be preserved and protected, as the late owner had wanted. This is what the late owner did for many years until his death a couple of years ago, protecting it. Now he is gone. The possible future is that an Ashram will be built on the sacred mountain,as the Indian Prince that owns most of the mountain wants to do as soon as this final parcel becomes available. The other negative alternative is that it becomes what it is on the Mexican side of the mountain, a business that commodifies indigenous new age spirituality as an “indohotel”, complete with their own resident shaman that many non indians come pay several thousand dollars a week for an indigenous traditional and cultural experience, and lose a few pounds in the process.
