The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday that a group of people, including two Pala tribal officials, working on a project to improve drinking water have received environmental awards.
Paula Stigler and Lenore Volturno of the Pala Band of Mission Indians and officials from the Native Cultures Institute of Baja California, Aqualink Water System and JA JAN Coalition were recognized for working together to make drinking water quality better in indigenous areas of Baja California in Mexico.
The Pala tribe is using EPA Border 2012 money to coordinate efforts to train communities on the proper maintenance and use of new water systems, the EPA said in a news release.
The EPA’s Region 9 Environmental Awards program honored 38 groups and individuals out of 160 nominees. The program covers California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Pacific Islands and tribal lands, the news release stated.
